CABLE committee meeting, 6th September 2016, 2.00pm (AEST)

  1. Trunk updates:

a) Updates this month, #119 to allow Jenkins testing

A small technical change. Shouldn't impact any application output.

b) Updates in progress

i) GSWP3 #86

Happy for this to go into trunk. Claire also progressing use of Lars' I/O for the GSWP3 case with the potential for this to form the basis of generic I/O in the future.

ii) #62 (radiation/albedo bug fix, ASAP), #92 (if BP confirms), #66 (initialisation bug), #89 - Jenkins tests?

JS getting ready to run Jenkins tests on these tickets.

iii) SLI and POP and other VH/LN enhancements, #18, #61, #73, #93, #90, #94.

JS, VH, RL discussing next steps after committee meeting in preparation for VH visiting UNSW to work on merging code with MD's hydrology.

iv) #95 (and #44)

  1. CABLE community activities

a) Trunk consolidation/priorities meeting - 25/7. See notes: CodeConsolidation

Meeting held. Agreed on merge of VH and MD code developments. Land-use needs to be handled by NESP project. A follow-up meeting held for VH to work through her land-use code with Aspendale staff.

JK requested documentation of what code improvements (e.g. those written up by VH) had been tested in ACCESS.

Need for documentation of namelist options noted e.g. through a README. Also a need to update User Guide on wiki.

b) CABLE workshop - need? length? date? (MIPs coordination)

Due to other commitments over the coming months decided to aim for a video conference rather than a workshop. Proposed 26th October, co-opting ARCCSS land group meeting. RL to check with MD. [Since done, and he is fine with this idea.] Committee members to encourage contributions for the meeting from staff in their institutions. Also suggested to include meeting reports and community updates.

  1. CABLE-JULES coupling

a) Progress with coupling into UM8.5 for ACCESS-CM2.

Not much progress to report.

b) CABLE in JULES4.2+/UM10.+ - Video con with Met Office

Some progress in getting CABLE to run in UM10+ with 5 year run completed. Initial analysis suggests some regionally larger temperature biases than the UM8.5 version but need a longer run to more fully assess. Video conference with the Met Office has provided some momentum on better defining how to do the coupling to allow for inclusion in the UM/JULES trunks. Another video meeting to be held 20th August.

  1. Benchmarking/test suite

a) CABLE technical test suite – Jenkins work (NH), ACCESS tests

Ready for some test use both by JS and as part of VH/MD code merging work.

Some documentation available. Need to consider how easy it is for general users to modify Jenkins tests for their needs.

b) PALS

Happy with progress. When up and running will have some increased functionality. Hope to be ready for GA trip to USA in late November to explore options for linking with iLambs etc.

  1. Meetings

GA to Europe soon for GLASS panel meeting and meeting on Water management in large-scale models.

a) AMOS conference 2017, abstract deadline passed

Possibility of coordinating a CABLE gathering. Monday evening before Tuesday start to conference?
