CABLE committee meeting, 4th February 2016, 2.00pm

  1. Trunk updates:

a) Updates in progress

i) Medlyn stomatal conductance, #56. Minor fixes based on review by BP. JS identified issue with ACCESS/CASA-CNP compatibility (since original was done from a pre CABLE2.2.3 branch). This has been resolved and the updates have been put into the trunk

ii) #62 (radiation/albedo bug fix, ASAP), #92 (if BP confirms), #66 (initialisation bug), #89 Should be relatively straightforward now #56 done

ii) SLI and POP, #18, #61, #73, #93, #90, #94. Progress on remaining issues from last minutes?

  • Vanessa is continuing to develop the Share branch that includes these changes. Substantive work on parallelisation and I/O. Two new modules to define climate and enable climate driven phenology allowing grass growth/death/re-growth to depend on soil moisture and temperature. Also some bug fixes. Everything flagged. Need to merge code and then determine what flagged code needs to become default version. Ned could have a role with this as part of any code clean-up. Suggest meeting with VH (in person or remote) after Feb 20 to go through code issues/enhancements (include BP, JS, RL).*

    iii) #95 (and #44) Nothing new to report

Other issues: hydrology development work (MD) is not ticketed. Need to encourage everyone working on development to ticket earlier rather than later. RL to note this in next CABLE news.

b) Update still to come #70 (BP to check backwards-compatibility) Nothing to report

  1. CABLE-JULES coupling

a) Progress with coupling into UM8.5 for ACCESS-CM2. Still being tested. Struggling to produce a realistic climatology e.g. accumulating snow, lack of energy balance.

b) CABLE in JULES4.2/UM10.1 JS working to get Matt Pryor's branch building and running here.

  1. Benchmarking/test suite

a) CABLE technical test suite – other test users?, document on wiki? CASA-CNP test? Nothing to report

b) PALS

  • Some momentum. Discussion around possible links between LiS verification toolkit, iLambs and PALS.*

VH reported the possibility of science testing using stock and flux data from GCP

c) Promotion/use of other bench-marking tools e.g. iLambs, ESMValTool Nothing to report

  1. Technical support

a) Possible role for Ned - meeting 3/2/16

  • Meeting held 3/2/16 between GA, NH, JS and RL. Discussed proposed work plan by Ned. Likely to be available for 6 month from March to work on a test suite for CABLE (basic run tests as well as science bench-marking) and code clean up. Plenty of possible work tasks and extra technical support for the code is appreciated at this time. Agreed to ask NH to send around work plan to committee. VH needs to be included in discussions on code clean up.*
  1. Meetings

a) AMOS (special session, land/CABLE, February, Melbourne) - lunch?? Organising a lunch seems impractical but should encourage conversation between the land sessions.

VH attended a GCP organised land-use meeting. Will report back. Suggest a CABLE video conference for March 16th for this and other updates.
