JaC - JULES and CABLE

This "project" has been referred to as JaC (Jack). So dubbed by our friends at the UK Met Office (UKMO). JULES and CABLE. Personally I prefer the acronym CaJ (Cas-ual). CABLE and JULES. At any rate it refers to the endeavour to intergrate CABLE into JULES in such a way that satisfies the UKMO to the extent that CABLE will be made available with each new release of JULES and ultimately the Unified Model (UM).
Both JULES and CABLE are complete LSMs in their own right. JULES has always existed as the native LSM within the UM. CABLE has been introduced as an alternative LSM in the UM, featured in CMIP5 (in ACCESS1.3) and scheduled to feature in CMIP6 (in ACCESS-CM2).

The model JaC, is envisaged to eventually enable co-opting of various land-surface processes chosen from either the CABLE model or the JULES model. However, in the short to medium term we are focused on delivering CABLE as a self-contained, distinct, alternative choice of Land-Surface Model (LSM). Here are some further clarifications of the extent to which CABLE will be completelty distinct from JULES.

See here for a scientific review of JaC.

See here for an ongoing technical review of JaC.

Our plan is to: Using the JULES framework, make CABLE an available alternative LSM to JULES which can either be run:

  1. offline in standalone fashion where atmospheric forcing is provided via file input OR

  2. online, providing the surace boundary conditions over land to the UKMO's Global Circulation Model(GCM), the Unified Model (UM)

In the first instance we are working towards achieving 1) over the next few months.
