Fixes #2758

  • ran the linter to address style issues (tox -e fix)
  • wrote descriptive pull request text
  • ensured there are test(s) validating the fix
  • added news fragment in docs/changelog folder
  • updated/extended the documentation

It looks like I've broken check / test pypy-3.8 - windows-latest (pull_request) , suggestions on how to fix are more than welcome.
