A rather unimportant code cleanup. Just general housekeeping.
It could be passed as an argument, as needed. That would be a better design, actually.
If it is a cursor, should just call it a cursor

This is a cleanup only, no functional change. The file-backed dictionary
uses a cursor to track where it is in the file. Move the cursor to the code
that uses it. This caused a lot of variable renaming churn, but little else.
