This is a simple PHP application that displays a random row from a MySQL database with each refresh. In addition, it includes a dynamic background which changes on each refresh. It was built as a method of public engagement with Chattanooga Open Data. You can preview it at http://jake.sl/DidChaKnow

Install Instructions:

1. Get your web server up and going. (Requires PHP and MySql. The entire read me could be about this). Refer to http://bit.ly/1sLDg7T if that’s unclear.

2. Copy the repository to your web server’s directory. Simply cloning the repo should do the trick. Refer to http://bit.ly/1nOsSFi if that’s unclear.

3. Create your MySql database. The easy way (which is always my favorite way) is to create your database in terminal on your server and then connect to it with a graphical application like MySql Workbench or Sequel Pro. Included in the repo is an example database. All you have to do is populate it with data (which is easy to do in the aforementioned programs). Refer to http://bit.ly/1m6ADK1 if that’s unclear.

4. edit config.php on your web server, inserting the information in their clearly marked spaces.

5. Set the permissions on config.php to something like 644.

Note on Images:

Images are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License and are excluded the license of DidChaKnow as a whole.

Images must be labeled as 1.gif, 2.gif, 3.gif, etc. The default number of images is set to 2. This can be changed by setting var totalCount = 2; to whatever you'd like. NameChanger is a good application for mass-renaming a collection of images.
