Description of what took place

We had some issues getting up and started. I believe Elida was running a chrome book which doesn't use the same zoom as we do and the controls are different. Also her resolution was much lower than we were used to dealing with. I didn't pick up her signature on MixPanel though so she may have been blocking tracking. You'd have to see the video to see what I mean. Elida is not color blind and does not require a screen reader. Also of note. Our site is only in English. While we are a volunteer group, and probably don't want to just translate directly using google translate, she was really interested in having the My311LA app in spanish. I'm guessing she has a number of constituents that would prefer this.

Problems Encountered

  1. Couldn't Click on "Explore My Council's 311 Data" till she clicked directly on the text.
  2. Tried to click on date and nothing happened. We need to make everything we put on the page interactive.
  3. Tried to click on the EC South east text, but only box is selectable to check the box.
  4. It wasn't immediately apparant that there was a submit button on the query. It didn't look scrollable till she hovered over the scroll area.
  5. I had to tell her about how to find the data visualization area. I think there is probably a more intuitive way to have people switch between maps and charts.
  6. Scrolling wasn't immediately apparent on the charts either.
  7. Can't tell what the abbreviations on the pie charts are.
  8. A little confused by multiple types in the charts. We should make the default on this simpler and easier to understand.

New Feature Suggestions

  1. Make Menu selections at top clickable anywhere on the bar nearby
  2. Make Date or time selection fully interactive. Titles included.
  3. Make NC or other area selection selectable on all area of text and boxes
  4. Make it immediately apparent when scrolling is available.
  5. More intuitive way to switch between maps and charts?
  6. Make scrolling more visible on charts page
  7. She asked how to read the line chart, and which line is which type request she chose. (Definitely, need to implement our sticky legend design asap)
  8. Spell out what the abbreviations are and mean on pie charts somewhere.
  9. Explore a design where the more advanced users can do multiple selections for charts, but perhaps the default is one item. The first time someone visits our site, we should keep the charts & maps simple and clear. (E.G. bulky items & graffiti on one chart is probably confusing for a 1st time user)

UX Process Improvement Suggestions

  • Need better email on the invite with zoom instructions
  • Need Pre-Scripted Questions
  • Instructions for using zoom
  • Change UX Interview Form to include if they have used zoom before (how familiar)
