Term | Definition |

Conviction | Court judgment that someone is guilty of an offense as a result of a trial or plea of guilty. |

Client | A client is a person provided legal advice by an attorney. |
Customer | A customer is a person making use of the service to inform and for self-help. |
Expungement | The removal of a criminal conviction from the record of an individual. The process is typically a civil proceeding conducted under the code of civil procedure. |
In Forma Pauperis | It is typical that a court procedure allows for access to the judicial system for those persons who do not have the resources to pay the court costs associated with filing the case. The typical course would be for the individual to make application with an affidavit and motion setting forth the request and the circumstances that make proceeding in forma pauperis, with the court making a determination of eligibility. In forma pauperis is a Latin term that means essentially "as an indigent." |
Jurisdiction | The authority of a court over the persons and subject matter of a case. For expungement cases in Missouri, the court with jurisdiction over an expungement is the one that issued the sentence in the original criminal case. |

Ordinance | A law enacted by a municipality that applies to the geographic area of the municipality. |
Petition | A document filed to begin a case and identifying the petitioner, defendants, essential facts, the law that allows the case to proceed, and the relief requested from the court. |
Plaintiff | The person filing a petition and seeking relief under the applicable rules of civil procedure. |
Pro Se | An individual may participate in civil legal proceedings without the assistance of an attorney. A court may consider whether the individual has the mental capacity to understand the proceeding and participate meaningfully in the process. Missouri's expungement process is designed to allow individuals to apply pro se. Pro se is a Latin term meaning essentially "for one's self." |
Rules of Procedure | The rules controlling how a case is handled and proceeds through the court process. Generally, the Rules of Civil Procedure apply to the case. Additionally, there may be local court rules that apply to the case and must be followed. |
Sentence | The punishment ordered for a defendant convicted of a crime.1 |
Statute | A law passed by a legislature.1 |
Venue | Venue is the location where a case may be heard. |
