Firmware dumps / images

files in bin/:

  • JC_M_T3A_v1.XX.bin: extracted firmware image from update tool
  • JC_M_T3AS_v1.XX.bin: extracted firmware image from update tool
  • t3a_dump_v1.26.bin: dumped via SWD (see below, contains remnants from earlier fw version)
  • t3a_dump_cleaned_v1.26.bin: t3a_dump_v1.26.bin with cleaned padding regions, settings etc.
  • t3a_dump_boot_v1.26.idb: IDA Pro project, bootloader (finished)
  • t3a_dump_main_v1.26.idb: IDA Pro project, main firmware (not yet finished)
  • t3a_dump_sram_init_boot_v1.26.bin: SRAM content written by armlib/Keil init code (bootloader)
  • t3a_dump_sram_init_main_v1.26.bin: SRAM content written by armlib/Keil init code (main firmware)

T3AS firmware is for GD32F305/GD32F307 version of the board, which was released in February of 2023.

Constructing full flash image from dump

There's a script for that task!

$ ./mkfullimage.sh bin/JC_M_T3A_v1.26.bin
$ sha1sum bin/t3a_dump_cleaned_v1.26.bin bin/JC_M_T3A_v1.26.bin.full

Debugging with OpenOCD

openocd -f openocd_ft4232h_swd.cfg

Dumping flash:

Read protection is not enabled! :-)

openocd -f openocd_ft4232h_swd.cfg -c "init; reset halt; flash read_bank 0 firmware_dump.bin 0 0x40000; exit"

Flashing:

openocd -f openocd_ft4232h_swd.cfg -c "init; reset halt; flash write_image erase firmware.bin 0x08000000; reset run; exit"

Patching firmware

Take a look at the stuff in patch/.

T3B Bootloader dumping

It seems that AiXun started using RDP1 on T3B. Thus, it's not possible to dump the bootloader directly. There are a few options, though:

  • Voltage glitch attack to disable RDP1, then dump via SWD
  • Exploit GigaVulnerability # 2 or # 3, e.g. with sraptor_exploit
  • Flash a dumper firmware through the regular update mechanism.

I already went the voltage-glitching way for various microcontrollers but since I don't own a T3B, I wanted to provide an easy way to dump it for others. Thus, I reused my previous work for patching the T3A firmware and created a patched T3B firmware that allows dumping the whole flash through USB.

Instructions:

  1. Create a patched firmware binary in t3x_dumper_patch/: ./patch_t3b.sh (or simply use the one provided)
  2. Get aixun_t3x_updater and flash the patched firmware: ./t3xupdate.py fw_t3b_patched.bin
  3. Run the dumper: ./dump_fw.py
  4. Flash a regular image again with aixun_t3x_updater

Credits

Many thanks @ruslan66 for his patience and nerve, helping dumping the T3B bootloader! (check #4 compatibility with t3b)
