If you're new to the Netherlands, shopping for basic household items can be a challenge when you can't recognize store names. This page is dedicated to helping you find what you need.

Dutch equivalents to American big brand stores:

Dutch Brand American Brand Description
Hema, Blokker Target Mid-quality household items, stationary, clothing, snacks, etc.
Dirk and Bas Grocery Outlet Cheap foods
Xenos, Zeeman Dollar-store quality stuff. Good for cheap party supplies and some basic household items.
Bijenkorf Nordstrom Department store.
V&D Macy's Department store.
C&A Kohl's Department store.
Kruidvat, Etos Rite-Aid Drugstore, health & beauty stuff.
Albert Heijn Safeway, Ralph's Grocery store.
Marks & Spencer (on Kalverstraat) Trader Joe's Grocery store (doesn't have as much produce as Trader Joe's).
Marqt, Biomarkt, Ekoplaza Whole Foods Organic ("biologisch" in Dutch) grocery stores.
Gamma, Praxis Home Depot Home improvement and garden supplies.
Douglas Sephora Make-up, perfumes, beauty supplies.
Saturn, MediaMarkt Best Buy Home electronics and appliances.
Dobey PetSmart Pet supplies.
Leonidas (Belgian brand) See's Candies Very affordable and delicious Belgian chocolates.
