I've been going through our list of proposals and see this one had evaded my notice. I think this is a good idea. |

Ok, I've done some testing on this because I was reminded that we've tried this before and run into issues. So I'm adding this info here for context. The main issue seems to be that pcp's RPM includes a number of files in /var/ /var/lib/pcp/* This is a big problem for packages installed in the Container for ostree-native-containers... it's a problem for ostree in general see: fedora-silverblue/issue-tracker#430 for some related context with here performancecopilot/pcp#816 we can see where PCP did some good work to support ostree systems, and I can see evidence that some of this is definitely working when i install the packages, but again, i think the ostree-native-containers stuff is breaking it a bit more than usual. I've gotten to the point where I think I could pretty easily provide a solution where:
I think this is has value on Universal Blue in general, but especially in bluefin and ucore where we're installing Cockpit already. |

One of the big issues with setting up a lot of systems is the different set of tools people prefer to use with monitoring, like
htop
instead oftop
for example. In using RHEL, Red Hat recommend users to install
pcp
packages, which can provide plugins to extend functionality, and provides a good alternative to the individual tools people are fond of.This article lays out a good side-by-side comparison https://access.redhat.com/articles/2372811
PCP integrates with Cockpit and provides some graphing for users who enable it.
PCP also has a plugin for lm_sensors and can display CPU temperature information in Cockpit.
Is there any interest in looking at using
pcp
in uBlue?Beta Was this translation helpful? Give feedback.
