I wonder if it would fit well in the current guide? If so, we can ask the author @AllanCameron to convert it to a form befitting of the guide.

While I found that answer very informative (+1). I think it fits, as the introduction says "This guide is a comprehensive resource for contributing to base R – for both new and experienced contributors". Under which section would you place it?

Just for reference, the table is similar to the one in R-internals (which isn't referenced much in the R-dev guide itself).
