There are some inconsistencies:

  • Emi|CO2|Gross is too small:
    In the current version, negative LUC emissions as well as CDR emissions from the CDR module (direct air capture and enhanced weathering) are not added to the net variable.
    A solution would be to calculate the variable as
    Emi|CO2|Gross = Emi|CO2 + Emi|CO2|CDR and thereby we ensure that Emi|CO2|Gross remains accurate without the need for adjustments if more CDR technologies are added in the future.

  • p_share_atmosco2 is a little too high:
    It doesn't contain industry process emissions, which are also "fossil".
    The solution is to add Carbon Management|Carbon Capture|+|Industry Process to the denominator of the calculation of the share. All variables using this share are hence slightly affected.

  • Emi|CO2|Gross|Energy|Demand|+|Industry is too large:
    Right now it uses the variable Carbon Management|Storage|Industry Energy|+|Synfuel which may contain atmospheric AND fossil CO2, but it should only account for the atmospheric part (i.e. the CDR part) of it.
    Solution:
    Emi|CO2|CDR|Industry CCS|Synthetic Fuels and Emi|CO2|CDR|BECCS|Industry should be used instead.

  • Emi|CO2|Energy|+|Demand, Emi|CO2|Energy|Demand|++|Gases and Emi|CO2|Energy|Demand|+|CDR could be too high:
    REMIND can use fegas for the dac process and would in that case capture 90% of the emissions.
    This is a minor issue and it might be good to wait for the refactoring of the CDR module, which will affect the underlying REMIND variables too.

@Renato-Rodrigues @katarkow @strefler @tabeado
These are the inconsistencies I found so far (I'm currently looking for more). If you have any other suspicious candidates in mind, please feel free to add. Also, especially for the carbon managers, please double check my statements :)
