I am creating my own CV, I was wondering whether it's possible to bold a given name in each of the publications, just highlighting the name, like this

You should be able to insert markdown formatting in the spreadsheets. Try this:

Alam H\*, **Tang M\***, ......

Note: Adding backslash (\) escapes the symbols.
