Some NUR repositories don't have overlays, which require another method to install.

for the life of me, I cannot get this to work.

I've followed the steps in the README, it works from nix-env or nix-shell, but I don't get it how to use it from home-manager.

in firefox.nix, I've tried different ways from different sources, some using 24.05 others older, I've even checked out @rycee 's own configuration and I just put it down as my fundamental lack of understanding, I'm fairly new to the NixOS world.
