The term Android needs to be clarified more because it's a very ambiguous term. Are we referring to the kernel? Are we referring to AOSP? The Android versions (9, 10, 11, 12)? etc.

Not all OEMs implement these mitigations too so clarification of the term is necessary.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply.

I agree the term "Android" is vague, especially with the heterogeneity of the Android ecosystem, the different OEM/vendor's customisations, etc.

The whole purpose of this repository is to be as specific as possible, but sometimes we fine tune over time when we get the actual knowledge of specificities for this device, this Android version, etc.

So I think we need to use the following:

  • "Android X" refers to the Android version in the AOSP
  • "Kernel Y" refers to the Android Kernel version in the AOSP
  • "Samsung Galaxy S2 Android X" refers to the Android version for the Samsung Galaxy S2 device
  • "Samsung Galaxy S2 Kernel Y" refers to the Android Kernel version for the Samsung Galaxy S2

I Also think we should add the above rules to android.md so we make it clear for future edits and also because we may have to add more terms to avoid ambiguities in the future...

Hope that helps. Feel free to send a PR with the changes you think are worth doing!
