Nested lists are indented only when with 4 spaces or 1 tab, but not with 2 spaces. The latter seems to be gedits syntax highlighting.

I prefer the 2-space syntax, so I vote for this being the plugin syntax ;-)

most markdown standards i can find online talk about a 4 spaces indentation, so gedit and the underlying gnome library use 4 spaces, and the python module my plugin is based on uses 4 spaces too

you can either use 4 spaces (it's more readable), or use a regular tab and rely on gedit rendering to make it 2 characters wide

another possibility is to use pandoc to do the rendering (but in my experience it's a pain in the ass): you could then install and open dconf-editor to edit the value at /org/gnome/gedit/plugins/markdown_preview/pandoc-command, and according to the pandoc manual there are dozens of markdown dialects you can chose from. For example, for the github dialect which uses 2 spaces in lists, add '-f', 'gfm' in the array

(i initially planned on making the array editable from the preferences dialog window, but i kinda gave up half way through the implementation)
