This one would be cool to have!

My original plan was to create a new colour.io.spectrum module and use OpenImageIO (OIIO) to read/write our MultiSpectralDistributions along with the multi-spectral arrays as we support with colour.msds_to_XYZ definition.

If you look at the colour.io.image module, you will find two definitions that use OIIO to read and write images, this should be a good start!
