Debugging nil response from create_item

This isn't necessarily an issue per se, but I'm really struggling to determine why when I try to create a calendar item with CalendarFolder#create_item, I simply get a nil response. Is there any way to enable some sort of verbose testing mode so that I can get some kind of response from the call? It seems that this kind of situation should raise an exception rather than simply returning nil.
