Crossfading bewteen songs

I'm wondering how hard would it be to add a fade out to the currently playing song and a fade in to the newly picked song. I'd do it myself if I knew how the code works, as I've worked with Java before. Right now, the transition is too rough, it suddenly stops the last song and instantly plays the new song at default volume.
