Switch to button style Variant Picker from standard drop downs

Hey there -

Hoping someone has some insight here. I'm trying to construct a replacement options mustache template to override the default drop down style variant picker in favor of the button setup that is offered standard in current Shopify themes. I can't find any documentation on what should go into the template, all I have is the .liquid from the default theme for both styles and the standard options template. I found a closed issue that references this, but the example provided looks like it is attempting to swatch the color variant as well and I haven't been able to get an adaptation to work.

I've seen a lot of embeds achieve this so I can't imagine that I'm the first person to run into this issue 😅 Is there a reference out there that I just can't find?
