Initial product image isn't from correct variant

Somewhere between version 4.13 and 5.0, the initial image that loads changed from my selected variant to the default product image.

Example: https://www.juliedeily.com/shop/ (switch away from Tahiti Blue, then back, on "Ladies' Short Sleeve V-Neck Tee Pink Heart")

This could be us having a faulty implementation that no longer matches some new requirements of the current version, but since I couldn't find any documentation I'm publishing here in case anyone else is experiencing something similar.
