In 1.4.3/1.4.4 the URLConnection loader SPI is unused, but was still preserved, so theoretically one could configure the Service Loader mechanism to still use it, although it is highly disregarded. With the next service release it should be dropped.

We'll deprecate them in 1.4.5 and drop them in 1.5.
