No line plot output from recipe_russell18jgr.yml

Hi,
I was testing recipe_russell18jgr.yml, and noticed that I do not get any line plot output. I expected to find something similar to the reference publication: https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JC013461

This applies for diagnostics: Figure_2, Figure_3b, Figure_3b-2, Figure_5g, Figure_7h, Figure_7i, Figure_9a, Figure_9b, Figure_9c

I thought this must be a bug, but looking at the reference runs I see that these plots are missing already in release v2.4.0. Does anyone know if the figures were produced for an earlier version of ESMValTool2?

The diagnostics are written in NCL, which I have not worked with before. I guess it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what is going on in the scripts, but it would help to know when it was working last time, to pinpoint what might have changed.

@amarjiitpandde @axel-lauer Since you respectively created and reviewed #1592 in which this recipe was implemented, would you be able to help here?

I just ran recipe_russell18jgr.yml with ESMValTool v2.8. The output still looks like the one when we got back then when we implemented this recipe into ESMValtool v2.0. If I remember correctly, the reference datasets (observations) were not implemented in this version of the recipe. Unfortunately, this also did not happen later as it was originally planned. So I am afraid this is not a bug but a (missing) feature 😏
