when I launch, roslaunch chapter8_configuration_gazebo.launch
I get the following error
Invalid tag: Cannot load command parameter [robot_description]: command [/opt/ros/indigo/share/xacro/xacro.py

This code is for ROS fuerte, you should use https://github.com/AaronMR/Learning_ROS_for_Robotics_Programming_2nd_edition instead.
Anyway, it looks like you need to sudo apt-get install ros-indigo-xacro
sudo apt-get install ros-indigo-xacro
